Samantha Collins stood on the weathered dock behind the bait shop and inspected the aging canvas sunshade atop their twenty-five foot pontoon boat. She preferred to get out on the water with the sun on her head, but she knew city folks wilted fast in the Florida heat. And it just didn’t do to antagonize paying customers.
Get a grip, Mary Sunshine, she scolded herself. The problem wasn’t really the tourists. The problem was the city commission and their crazy scheme.
A car rumbled into the gravel parking lot with an impatient purr and Sam’s hope faded. She’d worked on enough engines to know a sports car when she heard it, and in her experience, sports car drivers usually weren’t big nature lovers. She wondered idly whether this one would be annoying or just plain bored by their little junket.
Pasting a professional smile on her face, Sam turned toward the parking area and stopped short as the driver unfolded his length from the low-slung car and then scanned the area with one all-encompassing glance.
Sam’s eyes widened behind her dark sunglasses. Weekday cruises tended to attract retirees in polyester and plaid. This guy was a whole different animal. Though he was dressed in tan Dockers and a light blue polo shirt, his California tan, sun-bleached hair and dark glasses made him look like he should have a surfboard tucked under his arm. Add a scruffy beard and he could be Matthew McConnaughey, one of People magazine’s sexiest men alive.
Sam stepped onto the dock to greet him, but when he turned in her direction and flashed that lopsided, boyish grin, all white teeth and relaxed confidence, Sam’s world shuddered to a frantic, screeching halt.
Her breath backed up in her lungs and her heart thundered louder than a summer squall. With shaking hands, she adjusted her sunglasses, pulled down the visor on her ball cap, and tried to wrap her mind around what she was seeing. Stay calm, girl. Breathe.
It couldn’t be, but it was.
